Okay, so maybe you aren’t really doing it wrong, but you try to come up with a catchy title for a post about baking soda and get back to me. No really, get back to me – this could get interesting …
Anyways, one of my FAVORITE cleaning products is good ‘ol baking soda. You can use it for so many different surfaces, and it has great cleansing properties – especially when mixed with a couple other common household products.
The Kitchen Sink
I clean my kitchen sink using a mixture of baking soda, dawn dish soap, and essential oils once a week. I start out sprinkling a layer of baking soda in the sink, swirl in a little bit of the soap, drop 10ish drops of a fresh smelling essential oil (I usually use lemongrass!), and scrub it all together to make a paste.
I try to let this mixture sit for 10-15 min. This let’s the essential oil permeate the house a bit, and I feel like it just gets the sink cleaner. I sprinkle in some vinegar to my scrub and give it a few more brushes before I wash it all off with warm water.
I usually top this off by cleaning the sink with a normal kitchen cleaner to get those germs gone for good (or at least for the following 5 minutes before I need to use the sink again).
Bathtubs / Showers / Grout
The same mixture I use for the sink I use in the tubs / showers around the house for a good scrub. The combination of the baking soda, dawn soap, and vinegar really makes a good scrubbing paste that will get in ALL the crevices! I usually combine the use of a magic eraser for my white tubs / showers especially – these two together seem to get any stain out
Cleaning Carpets
Baking soda can help get stains out of carpet, but it can also help with odor, too. I think we all know that sticking baking soda in the fridge neutralizes odors there – but have you tried it around your home? Sprinkle it in your carpet and let it sit for 45 minutes before vacuuming it up – it really helps neutralize pet smells specifically. Try this on the couch, too!
If you have a stain to get out, try sprinkling some baking soda on it, followed by a sprinkle of vinegar. Depending on the carpet (disclaimer – do not try this without testing on a discreet area first!), it can sometimes lift the stain from the carpet!
Dirty/Greasy Dishes
We all know what our morning coffee leaves behind in the cup. It is even worse in the metal containers we are all migrating too that help keep the coffee hot longer. Or how about that greasy pan you cooked burgers in last night that still felt greasy after the overnight soak? Mix some baking soda in a tub of warm water and soak those dishes – the stains and grease should scrub away much easier!
So, go on … Amazon prime a bulk size of baking soda to yourself and get to work! What are your favorite cleaning hacks? Share them with me in the comments!
